Oh, Lauryn, where art thou? After smash success with both “The Score (The Fugees)” and her first solo album, featured above, I had assumed that we would see much more from this multi-talented singer/rapper/actress/song writer. But, since dropping this masterpiece in 1998 and winning a grip of Grammys, she pretty much disappeared. Her follow up album was extremely bland and disappointing, but it could never take away from my opinion of this album.

This album is a personal favorite of mine. The way that Tribe crossed hip-hop and jazz made me sit up and take notice. At a time in my life where I was getting into a lot of classic rock, this album pulled me back towards hip-hop and first got me into jazz in general. A landmark, both in my life and in popular culture.

I wasn’t sure what album to do today, and then I looked down in the middle console of the car and found this CD. Probably the finest offering by Billy and the gang, this album still sounds new to me, and every time I listen to it I am transported back to my youth. It still amazes me that there were four hit songs on this album, considering how much trouble the band was having working with each other while recording it! If you like your rock music with a twist, pick this CD up now.

Most people either love or hate Steely Dan. I, personally, love them, and this album is a great reason why. Jazzy and sophisticated, this album features a who’s who of session musicians. Hip-hoppers will find more than a few recognizable samples on this album…
